Wynns Coonawarra Estate was the first winery to be established in the
Coonawarra, by John Riddoch in 1896. The winery is located on the world
famous strip of 'Terra Rossa' soil that produces fruit of an exceptional quality.
This year's Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Shiraz Merlot is a fine
example of the style. Wynns Cabernet Shiraz Merlot is a rich and complex
wine with enhanced softness derived from the blending of these three classic
red grape varieties. Its soft fruit plus judicious oak handling is well balanced
and has created a wine perfect for current drinking or short-term cellaring, reflecting its regionality.
The first Wynns red blend (a Cabernet Sauvignon - Shiraz or "Hermitage as Shiraz was referred to then) was produced in 1969 making this "Red Stripe"
red blend the 39th vintage.
Grape Variety Shiraz Maturation Ten months oak maturation using a mixture of predominantly French oak (87%) and the remainder with American oak. Colour: Young and vibrant red-purple hues. Nose: Some elegant, floral notes and crushed raspberries, with an edge of spice and smoky oak. Vanilla and spice aromas support concentrated dark cherry fruit and toasty fragrant oak on the nose. Palate: Appealing ripe, gentle tannins and soft acidity frame an elegant, cool climate styled Shiraz with attractive black fruits. Earthy, spicy notes add complexity and length to this medium bodied Coonawarra Shiraz.
Grape Variety: Shiraz Maturation: Matured for 20 months in new French (54%) and new American oak (9%), the remainder is aged in 9% one year old and 28% two year old French oak. Colour: Deep red with a vibrant purple hue. Nose: Immediately aromatic and revealing, the warmer 2005 vintage is apparent on the nose with lovely ripe blueberry fruit, while still showing regional pepper and bay leaf aromas. Palate: An abundance of raspberry fruit holds the mid-palate with juicy viscosity. Darker plum adds to the wine's depth, with excellent oak integration that highlights ripe berry fruit flavours, while adding length on the palate with firm, chalky tannins.
Cabernet Sauvignon is known for its elegance - soft, fruit driven in style and with feathery tannins, this Cabernet offers easy drinking early but will cellar with confidence. Expect cassis, violets, crushed herbs and a long, soft finish with enough concentration and texture to make the wine feel more serious.
Aroma:Cassis, black forest fruits, eucalypt and hints of violets.
Flavour:The ultimate Cabernet fruit profile with concentrated mixed berries, mulberry, green herbs and a hint of pepper. A backdrop of oak supports the wine. Serve with pepper crusted scotch fillet, roast vegetables or slow cooked lamb shanks.
Cabernet Sauvignon is a deeply coloured, supple textured variety with a prominent but elegant tannin profile.
Imagine a clown sneezing glitter. Not as fun as Moscato! Moscato is delicious. There is nothing like that light, perky fizz and natural raciness to make things feel good. Freshness is key and this Moscato has it in spades. Crushed green grapes, hints of peach and a little lift of tropical fruits to round out the soft palate but the real hero is the delicate 'frizzante' bubbles. A big win. Aroma:Squished green grapes, passionfruit, flower petals. Flavour:Lightly sparkling with the most pleasing, delicate fizz, and lively, pure fruit flavours. This Moscato tastes like crushed green grapes with peaches. Serve with fruit platters, apple pie or a cheese plate. The Grape Moscato is a style of wine that showcases a light sparkling quality and higher sweetness levels. Great with... Any occasion, anytime, anywhere with anyone.
A big red wine that flexes more muscle than a bodybuilder on gym day. When Cabernet shakes hands with Shiraz it becomes more of an arm wrestle with a friendly outcome. Cabernet provides slippery texture, dark fruit flavours and a little herbal complexity while Shiraz lends its full bodied red fruits and spice. The resulting wine is larger than life, but not head exploding, and shows plenty of good drinking when young. Aroma:Blackcurrants, herbal notes and dried fruits. Flavour:Silky Cabernet with black forest fruits meets boldly flavoured red berry Shiraz. Full bodied with some slippery tannins and a long fleshy finish. Serve with a hearty Irish stew or a beef and Guinness pie. The Grape Shiraz and Cabernet are perfectly compatible, offering a full bodied, robust red wine perfect for cellaring. Great with... Pack a few for a ski trip to the chalet, great for when the snow comes pelting down.
