This incredibly rare, one-off Port-style wine is made predominantly from the Tinta Roriz grape variety with small amounts of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa from the 2004 vintage. Undoubtedly the first wine of this type to be made in New Zealand using these native Portuguese grape varieties that are used in the making of the great wines of the Douro Valley, Portugal. Following harvest, fermentation and fortification the wine spent 12 years maturing in 225 litre French oak barriques before both hand-bottling and labelling in October 2016. Each bottle is individually numbered. Hand crafted.
“The Gimblett” is traditionally made from a blend of grape varieties. The Cabernet family gives structure and fresh aromatics. Merlot gives richness and mid-palate weight with Malbec helping with complexity, density and colour.
The result is a wine with exotically perfumed aromatics that include ripe blackberries and red fruits plus hints of florals and dried herbs. There is superb clarity of flavours on the palate. Structurally the wine is complex, with textural tannins. This structure will allow the development of further complexity over the next 10 years.Try with red meat and game dishes.
Fruit flavours are in the cool to moderate spectrum of citrus, white flowers, ripe grapefruit and melon. The style is mid-weight with elegant oak nicely tucked in, providing texture and lingering flavours of cashew, roasted almond and gun flint. The structure has a tight shape with the finesse and concentration that are hallmarks of Trinity Hill Chardonnay. It displays delicacy but richness and the beautifully linear acidity makes it a fantastic match with food. An excellent partner with white meats and seafood dishes.
The Gimblett Gravels Syrah has a deep and youthful vibrant crimson colour. Wild raspberry, blueberry, cracked pepper and hints of vanilla bean show on the nose. Powerful and balanced ripe tannins give the wine great savoury structure. Oak plays a supporting role with the wine living on a pure fruit expression. This purity combined with refreshing natural acidity means there is potential for aging. Development of mineral, gamey characters will result from bottle-age. Great with red meat dishes but especially good with game, particularly with duck and venison.
The wine shows attractive brambly, blackberry-like ripe fruits along with spicy and exotic complexity. The palate is rich and textural with salivating soft tannins. Licorice, chocolate and sarsaparilla flavours linger on the finish. This wine will age extremely well for at least five years but equally can be drunk in its youth.
Quite richly textured wine with appealing sweet fruit and seductive plum and berry flavours. A strongly fruit-focused wine supported by ripe tannins that give a pleasantly drying finish. Honest, well made wine representing good value at this price.
A Merlot predominant blend and includes smaller proportions of alternative varieties. These have added further complexity and palate interest. The leather and plum aromas of the Merlot combine with spice and red fruit characters of Tempranillo and Malbec. Cassis aromas and structural backbone are provided by the Cabernet family.
Aromatics of plum, and blackberry take on a tinge of chocolate along with some spicy touches from time spent in oak. The palate is soft and smoothly Merlotesque, fruit-forward yet complex. Eminently drinkable.
Typical fruit characters such as grapefruit and melon are supplemented by biscuity barrel ferment characters with a light butteriness from malo-lactic fermentation. The wine is rich and round, with soft acidity and attractive sweet fruit. A portion of the juice was fermented and aged in French oak barriques, with the rest in stainless steel tanks.
